Kevin Rudd / djackmanson Following the appointment of Peter Costello and Brendan Nelson to high-profile government positions, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has announced today that he has elected himself to the position of United Nations Secretary General. To begin his duties in 2010, Rudd bypassed all traditional appointment processes and contacted the incumbent Ban Ki-moon to notify him of the move late last night.
While nominations traditionally take place within Security Council, with appointments determined by the General Assembly, Rudd today dismissed what he described as “bureaucratic nonsense”, telling media that he was “bound to get the job” and is simply “cutting to the chase”.
“In 2007 the Australian people emphatically declared they wanted me to govern the nation. Today I am emphatically declaring I want myself to run the United Nations”.
“It’s clear that I’m a shoe-in for the job, I’ve done everything right, I’ve got a top-notch humanitarian and economic record. My term will focus on long-term sustainability of the UN, coupled with programmatic specificity.”
Joe Hockey is expected to be appointed to leader of the Labor Party next week.
