Forget Woodstock, We Are The Music Generation
Columnists
Written by Kevin Slash

It’s time that we, Generation X and Y, claim what is rightfully ours – the title of ‘Music Generation’. Woodstock was great and all, but how often in history has music been as good as it is now? The short answer: never. The phenomena we are currently experiencing has never been witnessed before, and probably never will be again.

Surpassing the likes of The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Led Zepplin, the classical lyrics of Beyonce, My Chemical Romance and Chris Brown will be written into the annals of history as reaching the musical summit of mankind. One only has to turn on the radio to experience the magic – soothing to the ears, enriching for the soul.

“On your video phone
Make a cameo
Take me on your video phone
I can handle you
Watch me on your video phone
On your video, video
If you want me you can watch me on your video phone”

Beyonce, Lady Gaga – Video Phone

The use of metaphors and rhyming stanzas are pure lyrical genius. Beethoven could only dream of composing wonders such as these.

An example of the music we are blessed to hear

“I can transform ya, I can transform ya,
Anything ya want, I can (I can) get it for ya,
You're my baby girl,
Shoulda known I did it for ya,
I can trans, I can trans, I can transform ya”

Chris Brown – Transform Ya

It's beautiful in a way, being able to recognise the talent of these musicians and appreciate their work in the present. These are the golden years of music, and are to be deeply cherished.

So please, write to your local radio stations. Write to your historical societies. Write to so-called ‘music experts’, and lead them to the light. The sooner we can all appreciate these breathtaking musical accomplishments, the closer we will be to enlightenment.
